Becoming a successful Instagram influencer isn’t easy, and it’s no secret that Instagram is a very different platform in 2020 than it was just a few years ago.
How to Become an Instagram Influencer
Long gone are the days when getting featured on a larger profile would grant you hundreds of thousands of new followers. However the competition changed and is much more difficult today.
Popular Instagram influencers like Huda Kattan are worth millions and have even gone on to launch successful businesses using their audiences.
Of course, Huda is only one of the many influencers that have amassed millions of dollars, but how did she go about it exactly?
Have a read through this article for a good head start.
1. Pick a Niche to become a Successful Instagram Influencer
The first step in learning how to become an Instagram influencer is choosing a niche. You can’t be popular for everything, so its best to pick one thing you’re good at and knowledgeable in.
When people come to your page, they want to know what they can expect by following you and feel confident that they will consistently receive that type of content. Because of this, niching down is absolutely vital because it will help you grow your audience faster.
Once you pick a niche, you’ll have to stick to it. So pick something that reflects your true interest and not a niche you know nothing about.
Here are some questions to ask yourself that will lead you to your niche:
- What am I most passionate about?
- What am I most knowledgeable about?
- What could I happily create consistent content about for a year without making a dime?
2. Become an Influencer by making Instagram Business Account
An Instagram Business account has a lot of useful tools for influencers such as Instagram Insights.
Insights lets you know the demographic data of your followers. It allows you to identify follower fluctuations, top locations, audience activity times, profile views and website clicks, based on a set time period.
You can view Insights data for your overall account, as well as for specific posts.
If you’re learning how to become an Instagram influencer, this is important. You don’t want to just post stuff randomly. You want to come up with a good strategy.
What are the types of posts your followers love? What time should you post? Where are your followers located?
With a personal account, you’ll never know. While you could list down the likes and shares for each post, this takes a lot of time and it isn’t productive for the long-term. However, using Instagram Insights, you can get an accurate overview of your audience and the posts they love.
Another perk of Instagram Insights is ads. Tons of influencers are also business owners. They sell products, collaborate with brands and build their own business. So, it’s only natural that they’d want to create ads to upsell their products or service, and to get discovered by new followers.
Note that a business account is free, but you need to foot the bill for the ads. While costs money, the number of new followers you can attract are worth it!
3. Write Meaningful Captions to become a good influencer
Captions are a great opportunity to spark conversation and start forming meaningful connections with your community. They’re also a perfect place to provide value and inspiration to your audience.
My favorite kind of longer-form caption is the microblogging caption, which we encourage you to start incorporating into your Instagram strategy as much as you can! A microblogging caption is exactly what it sounds like: a mini blog post.
- For example, if you’re a food Instagram influencer, your microblogging caption could be about the 5 superfoods you need to add to your smoothies and why.
- If you’re a travel influencer, a microblogging caption might outline the 10 best things to do as a visitor in Bali.
Second, end your captions with a call-to-action. This is where you invite your audience to chime in in the comments and start a conversation with you related to the caption.
This call-to-action could be a question, an invitation to share, or an ask for advice.
4. Instagram Influencers hacks: Write an Effective Instagram Bio
The next step in learning how to become an Instagram influencer is knowing the value of a great bio!
An Instagram bio consists of 150 characters.
It may be short, but it’s the elevator pitch of your entire account. It introduces your brand to followers who don’t know who you are and what you do.
If you don’t have a clear and concise bio, customers probably won’t follow your brand. After all, would you trust an influencer who can’t even get their introduction right? Probably not!
So, how do you write a good Instagram bio?
A good tip is to ask yourself: What would I say if I were introducing myself at a networking event? Asking this question will help you determine the details you should include in your bio.
Another tip is keywords. List the relevant keywords you use to describe yourself and your brand. Once you know the obvious keywords that are relevant to your brand, you’ll be able to describe who you are and what you do. And, your followers will feel confident that they’re following the right profile.
5. Focus on Building Community for becoming an Instagram Influencer
While follower growth and engagement rate are important metrics to be mindful of, influencers should be focusing equally on the quality of the community they are cultivating with their audience.
No matter what stage you’re at in your Instagram influencer career, building relationships within your community is the single most important thing you can do.
Here are two of my best tips for building community:
- Get Conversational:
After posting on your feed, stick around on the app for at least 30 minutes after you’ve posted responding to comments and go back later in the day to respond to the rest.
When you receive DMs, always be sure to respond and strike up a genuine conversation. Sending voice notes adds a personal touch too.
- Get Your Audience Talking To Each Other
One way to do this is by asking your audience to engage with one another in the comments of a post.
6. Choose the Right Hashtags to become an influencer
Hashtags are important if you want to increase your following.
In fact, posts with hashtags gain 12.6% more engagement. This is because hashtags make your posts searchable for a term.
Hashtags can be:
- Lifestyle specific
- Brand specific
- Challenge-or contest-specific
- Product specific
A post should ideally have 5 to 30 hashtags. Some experts found that 11 hashtags per post is a good amount to target. Once you include more than 30 hashtags in one post, Instagram won’t let you comment in it. So, you want to avoid placing too many hashtags.
In addition, you can measure a hashtag’s performance via Instagram Insights. This way, you can determine which hashtags can best help you increase your reach.
7. Key to become an Instagram influencer: Interact with Followers
Instagram is obviously a social platform. So, you’ll have to interact with users to amass a good following.
If you’re new to Instagram, you can become an Instagram influencer by finding users who are interested in your niche.
Check out the Instagram feed of potential followers and reach out to them by commenting on their posts. What do you love about their posts? What do you say to make them feel good? How do you create a good first impression?
Leave comments that can help jumpstart conversations and relationships.
Don’t forget to interact with the followers you already have! If they leave a comment or ask a question in the comments section, be sure to reply!
Followers love it when influencers take the time to build relationships with them. And taking the time to communicate with them is essential in order to become an Instagram influencer. After all, some of them take the time to promote your content and talk about it with their network. So, the least you can do is to talk and thank them for their support.
8. To become an Instagram Influencer, Get in Touch With Brands
One of the most common complaints I hear from new Instagram influencers is that brands aren’t coming to them and, most of the time, it’s because their page isn’t set up in a way that will attract them!
Here are some things you can do to make sure that potential brand partners know that you’re open for business:
- Make sure you have a business profile
- Make your email address visible
- Be Strategic With Your Content
9. Diversify Your Platforms to become an Instagram Influencer
No influencer should rely completely on Instagram. Not only is this risky because you don’t “own” your audience on a 3rd party platform and can’t control the algorithm’s whims, it’s also a missed revenue opportunity.
By growing an audience on another platform, you are increasing the amount that you can get paid for brand collaborations.
For instance, if a brand approaches you to contract a few Instagram posts, you could add in a blog post and promotion to your email list and increase the rate significantly.
Which other platforms should you be on? It all depends on what your interests and strengths are, and which platform is best suited to your niche.
If you’re good on camera and are in a niche where communicating visually is vital, YouTube might be the perfect place for you. Have something of value to communicate and are well-spoken? Think about a podcast! Have you always loved writing? Look into setting up a WordPress blog!
Hopefully, these top tips have given you some inspiration and insight to kick off your social strategy as an Instagram influencer.
Remember success doesn’t happen overnight, but with consistency and commitment to your social channels, you’ll soon start to see a return in your efforts!
